’splore is a personal project for comparing travel
destinations. It remembers the places you love and the places you have been,
so they are still there when you come back.
’splore is served from
duavecito.daveponet.workers.dev — an earlier name for the same
project, and still its address.
Your information is never sold, and you will never be sent marketing.
There is no advertising, no analytics, and no tracking of any kind on this
site. The rest of this page explains exactly what is stored and who else your
browser talks to.
What Is Collected
If you do not sign in, nothing about you is stored. You can browse,
filter, sort, and search without an account, and no record of it is kept.
When you sign in with Google, Google hands this site two pieces of
information, and both are stored:
| What | Why |
| A Google account identifier |
Recognizes you across sign-ins. It is a number, not your email, and
unlike an email address it is never reassigned to somebody else. |
| Your email address |
Shown back to you as “signed in as,” so you know which
account you are writing to. It is used for nothing else. |
Beyond that, the only things stored are the ones you create by using the
site:
- Places you love — the destinations you mark with a heart.
- Places you have been — the destinations you tick.
- Your wish list — the destinations you mark with a sparkle.
- Saved filter combinations, if any exist on your account.
- Places you suggest — the name, where it is, what you wrote about
it, any link you gave, and whether you asked to be credited.
- A session token — a random value that lets the site know you
are signed in.
That is the whole list. No password is ever received, because Google handles
sign-in. No name, no profile photo, no contacts, no phone number, no location,
and no payment details are requested, received, or stored.
Suggestions, and What “Anonymous” Means
Suggesting a place needs an account. Each suggestion is read by the one person
who reviews them, and is not shown to anybody else.
Choosing to stay anonymous means you will not be credited publicly. It
does not make the suggestion unconnected to you: it is still linked to your
account behind the scenes, so that a question can be asked if there is one. If you
want no connection at all, the honest answer is not to send it.
Credits are not shown anywhere yet. Your email address will never be shown
publicly as a credit.
What Is Never Done
- Your information is never sold, rented, traded, or licensed to
anyone, for any amount, under any circumstances.
- You will never be sent marketing email. Your address is not added
to any mailing list, because there is no mailing list. The only email you
could ever receive is a direct reply if you write first.
- There is no advertising, no analytics, no tracking pixels, and no
profiling. No third-party script runs on this site for the purpose of
watching what you do.
- Your saved places and your email address are never shared with any other
service or person.
Information would only ever be disclosed if legally compelled — a valid
court order or equivalent legal process.
Cookies and Browser Storage
One cookie. After you sign in, a session cookie is set. It holds a
random token and nothing else — no name, no email, no readable data. It
is marked HttpOnly and SameSite=Lax, so other sites
cannot read it. It expires after 60 days, and signing out deletes it at once,
on the server as well as in your browser.
Local storage is used only for display preferences, such as which
banner color and wordmark you picked. It never holds personal information, and
it never leaves your browser.
No cookie on this site is used for advertising or tracking, which is why
there is no cookie banner to dismiss.
Other Services Your Browser Contacts
Loading this site causes your browser to request files from a few other
companies. Each necessarily sees your IP address and browser user agent,
because that is how the web works. None of them receives your email address
or your saved places.
| Service | What for | When |
| Cloudflare | Hosts the site, the images, and the database |
Every visit |
| unpkg | The Leaflet mapping library | Every visit |
| Esri / ArcGIS | The map tiles, ocean or satellite, and their labels |
When the map draws |
| Wikimedia Commons | Photographs |
Only when the site’s own image cache misses |
| Google Identity | The sign-in button |
Only when you open the account panel |
Typefaces are served by this site, not by Google. The two fonts in
the banner are carried inside the page itself, so loading ’splore does not
announce your visit to a font host.
Each of the companies above has its own privacy policy, which governs what
they do with what they see. This policy cannot and does not override theirs.
How Long It Is Kept, and How to Delete It
Your saved places are kept until you remove them or delete your account.
Session tokens expire after 60 days and are cleared automatically. Unmarking a
place removes it the moment the change reaches the server.
Deleting Your Account
You can do it yourself, immediately, without asking anyone. Open the menu
in the top right, then delete account, and confirm. No reason is
required and none is asked for.
That removes your email address, your saved places, the places you suggested,
and the account record itself. The row is deleted from the database, not flagged as deleted or
hidden from you — there is no copy kept behind the scenes. Every
device signed in to the account is signed out at the same moment, so a second
phone cannot continue using, or quietly recreate, an account you have deleted.
If a place you suggested has already been added to the site, the place stays
— it is a public place, not your information — but your connection to
it does not.
It is immediate and it cannot be undone. If you would rather have it done
for you, or you cannot reach the button, write to
hello@splore.life and it will be
done by hand.
Ordinary infrastructure backups and server logs, which are not under this
site’s control, may retain traces for a short period before rotating out.
If You Are in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area
’splore is run from the United States by one person and is not aimed at
any particular country. It is offered in English only, charges nothing, sells
nothing, and does no advertising, profiling, or behavioural tracking of any
kind. It is unlikely to fall under the UK GDPR or the EU GDPR on that basis.
The protections below are offered anyway, because they cost nothing to honour
and you should have them regardless of which argument is correct.
Who Is Responsible
’splore is operated by an individual, not a company. The contact point for
anything on this page, including every request below, is
hello@splore.life.
Why Your Information Is Processed
Your email address and your saved places are processed to deliver the
thing you asked for — an account that remembers your places across
devices. That is the entire purpose. There is no secondary use: no profiling,
no advertising, no automated decision-making, and no sale.
Where It Is Kept
The database runs on Cloudflare infrastructure in the western United
States. If you are in the UK or the EEA, your email address and saved
places are transferred to and stored in the United States, which is outside
your home jurisdiction. There is no way to use an account on this site without
that transfer happening, which is why it is stated plainly rather than buried.
If that is not acceptable to you, use ’splore without signing in —
everything except saving places works, and nothing about you is stored.
Your Rights
You may ask for any of the following, free of charge, without giving a
reason:
- Access — a copy of everything held about you.
- Rectification — correction of anything wrong.
- Erasure — deletion of the lot. You already have this
without asking anyone: the menu has a delete account button
that removes the record immediately.
- Restriction — a halt to processing while something is
disputed.
- Portability — your data in a machine-readable form. It is a
small JSON object and will be sent as one.
- Objection — to the processing described above.
- Withdrawal — where consent is the basis, you may withdraw it
at any time by deleting your account.
Requests are answered as quickly as one person reasonably can, and within
one month.
Complaints
If you think your information has been handled improperly, please write
first and give a chance to put it right. You also have the right to complain
directly to your national data protection authority — in the UK, the
Information Commissioner’s Office; in the EEA, the supervisory authority
for the country you live in.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 13 and should not be used by
them. If an account is found to belong to a child under 13, it will be
deleted.
Changes to This Policy
The operator reserves the right to change this policy at any time and at
its sole discretion. A revised policy takes effect as soon as it is posted
here, and continuing to use the site after that means accepting it.
The date at the top changes whenever the policy does, and a change that
materially affects what is collected or how it is used will be announced on the
site itself rather than slipped in quietly. That is a commitment about how
changes are made, not a limit on the right to make them.
If a change does not suit you, stop using the site and ask for your account
to be deleted.
